Jay Miles, an emergency medical technician with the Upper Perkiomen Valley Ambulance service and Chaplain in the Pennsburg Volunteer Fire Company, passed away on April 1, his colleagues announced in a statement.

Miles and a partner were responding to a call for a medical emergency late on Monday, March 13, UPVA officials said. After arriving at the scene and loading the patient onto the stretcher, Miles "suffered what would later be diagnosed as a severe hemorrhagic stroke," according to the release.

The EMT was evaluated and rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he underwent surgery immediately, UPVA wrote.

"Unfortunately, there was little to no neurologic improvement over a two-week period," and he died just 11 a.m. Saturday, officials said.

In addition to his service as an EMT, Miles had served as fire company chaplain in Pennsburg since 1993, his colleagues wrote in an online tribute.

"Jay, you will be missed severely by all who came in contact with you," Pennsburg Company brass said.

"We'll miss your smile, laugh, compassion, care, and your stories," wrote his UPVA colleagues on Facebook. "Fish for the big one and we'll meet again someday."

Emergency personnel throughout the region took to social media to memorialize the late Chaplain.
